More about this artwork

Odilon Redon's captivating masterpiece, "And In the Very Disk of The Sun Shines the Face of Jesus Christ" (1888), invites viewers into a symbolic and spiritual dialogue. This profound piece depicts the face of Jesus Christ, central and serene, ensconced within the blinding radiance of the sun. The divine countenance emerges from an array of dazzling, almost chaotic light rays, which create a striking contrast with the detailed, calm visage at the core. The intricate play of light and shadow rendered in monochrome enhances the mystical and otherworldly atmosphere of the painting. Redon's work is known for its dream-like quality and emotional depth, and this piece is no exception. The use of dense black and stark white intensifies the visual impact, directing all attention to the serene and slightly ethereal face of Christ. This work, emblematic of Redon's symbolist approach, transcends the mere representation of a religious figure by embedding it within a universal symbol—the sun. This portrays a powerful image of enlightenment, divinity, and redemption. The face of Christ in the disk of the sun invites contemplation on the divine light that guides and illuminates the spiritual path of the faithful. This piece not only showcases Redon's skill and uniqueness as an artist but also serves as a profound spiritual reminder of the light that exists even in overwhelming darkness.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
