More about this artwork

"Large Green Vase with Mixed Flowers" is a radiant display of Odilon Redon's fascination with the natural world, painted between 1910 and 1912. The composition features a robust, dark green vase showcasing an abundant arrangement of mixed flowers. Redon's signature style breathes life into this bouquet through a vibrant palette and a gentle interplay of light and shadow. In this painting, Redon utilizes pastel on paper to achieve soft yet vivid textures that magnify the ethereal quality of his floral subject. The bouquet is an eclectic mix, featuring blossoms in shades of red, white, blue, and yellow. The flowers themselves are loosely defined, encouraging the eye to move across the canvas and engage with each individual color and form. This array of flowers—each rendered with a unique character—seems to stretch outward, reaching beyond the confines of their vessel. Amidst the backdrop of a golden-hued canvas, the dark vase serves as a grounding element, enhancing the luminous effect of the petals and leaves. This work is an excellent example of Redon's transition from his earlier, more somber and mystical themes to the brighter, more expressive motifs that characterize his later years.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
