More about this artwork

Explore the depth and introspection in Odilon Redon's lithograph "To all appearances, it was a hand of flesh and blood just like my own." This compelling artwork from 1896 encapsulates both the realism and mystery characteristic of Redon's oeuvre. The image predominantly features a human hand delicately touching a sheet of paper, with part of a forearm visible, resting lightly on a wooden surface. The simplicity of the subject — a single hand interacting with paper — belies a narrative depth. The hand, rendered in subdued shades, allows the viewer to focus on the tactile essence and subtle details, such as the texture of the skin and the faint lines on the papers, which might hint at written words or sketches. A striking contrast is achieved with the dark, almost enveloping background, which not only enhances the introspective quality of the scene but also adds a layer of isolation and intimacy.Redon's art often traverses the line between the visible and the invisible, and this piece is no exception. It invites viewers to ponder on the unseen, the elements not depicted but implied – the thoughts of the person to whom the hand belongs, the content and significance of the text, and the surrounding environment from which everything else has been distilled away. This artwork engages the mind and soul, encouraging a personal interpretation that makes it resonate differently with each viewer.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
