More about this artwork

Odilon Redon, a pivotal figure in the Symbolist movement, often drew upon the mystical and the unseen for inspiration. In the intriguing artwork titled "Apollonius" created between 1896 and 1900, Redon presents a compelling portrayal of a figure bathed in a dream-like state, reflecting the artist's signature exploration of the obscure and subconscious. The depiction in the painting is striking yet subdued. The figure, suggested to be Apollonius—a famed ancient philosopher known for his mythical and possibly magical abilities—appears in a profile view. His delicate features are softly sketched, with his eyes gently closed, as if lost in a deep inner contemplation or a trance. The subdued use of line work and the sparse, almost ethereal application of pigment lend an otherworldly quality to the piece.Redon’s choice to focus closely on the head and the upper shoulders of Apollonius, omitting any elaborate background, highlights the introspective and personal nature of the moment captured. The neutral and unobtrusive tones of the background further envelop the figure in a quiet solitude, allowing viewers to delve into their interpretation of Apollonius's thoughts or visions. One of the most intriguing aspects of the artwork is the object held near Apollonius's face, resembling a pine cone or a floral element. This object may symbolize fertility, eternity, or philosophical depth, elements often explored by Redon. Such symbols invite viewers to reflect on the greater forces of nature and human understanding, intertwining with the Symbolist’s ideal of depicting not the visible, but the unseen forces that shape existence.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
