More about this artwork

Welcome to a vivid encounter with the mythological splendor of "Le Char D’apollon et Le Dragon," a captivating work by the French Symbolist artist Odilon Redon, dating back to around 1907. This painting, rich in both color and allegorical depth, is a fine example of how Redon's art transcends the ordinary to touch the mysterious and the mystical. The composition of the artwork unfolds in a dream-like scenario where the fantastical elements merge seamlessly with vibrant, almost ethereal color applications. Central to the scene are the majestic horses, powerful yet graceful, depicted in mid-gallop. These horses, almost floating against a chaotic, vivid backdrop, are pulling a chariot, believed to be that of Apollo, the Greek god associated with the sun, music, and prophecy.Behind these horses, a luminescent, fiery orb possibly represents the sun, radiating in luminous hues of yellow, orange, and red, encapsulating Apollo’s divine power. Below, contrasting the ethereal horses and sun, lurks a fantastical depiction of a dragon. This creature, embodying a blend of greens, blues, and bursts of red, adds a layer of foreboding and mystery, emphasizing the eternal struggle between celestial and chthonic powers.Odilon Redon’s unique handling of both subject and color creates a mesmerizing imagery that invites viewers to delve into a deeper understanding of myth and emotion. His work stimulates the imagination, allowing personal interpretations and a profound appreciation of his visionary aesthetics.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
