More about this artwork

Dive into the mystical essence of enlightenment with Odilon Redon’s painting, "Buddha," crafted between 1906 and 1907. This evocative piece is a stunning representation of tranquility and spiritual awakening in Redon's distinctive Symbolist style. In this painting, the figure of Buddha stands serenely at the center, exuding a sense of calm wisdom. Cloaked in a richly colored robe that flows with grace, the colors range from deep reds to golden yellows, contrasted strikingly against a muted, dream-like background. Each element of the attire, intricately detailed, seems to tell a story of cultural heritage and religious significance. The backdrop is a tapestry of nature and cosmic imagery. Sparse trees, their branches stretching towards the sky, align subtly with the figure, suggesting an interconnectedness between life and spirituality. The ground is dotted with delicate flowers, adding a touch of earthly existence to the spiritual theme.Overhead, the sky is a mesmerizing blend of blues and golds, with sun-like forms that radiate an almost mystical light, suggesting an ethereal realm or a state of enlightenment. This light seems to cast a gentle glow on the entire scene, reinforcing the atmosphere of profound peace and contemplation.Redon’s use of color and form turns the simple act of viewing into a meditative experience, inviting observers to reflect on the deeper meanings of enlightenment and the beauty of spiritual journeying. This painting not only captures the essence of Buddha but also serves as a bridge to the symbolic exploration of the self and the universe.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
