More about this artwork

Odilon Redon's evocative lithograph, "And All Manner of Frightful Creatures Arise," created in 1888, embodies his unique approach to capturing the darker, enigmatic aspects of the world around him. This striking piece employs a largely monochromatic palette, dynamically contrasting with the intense shadows and depths that characterize much of Redon's work.At the heart of this artwork lies a swirling, horned creature that emerges from the darkness, its physical form almost tangible amidst the abstract, dream-like surroundings. The spiraling horn and the textural contrasts of the creature's body draw the viewer's gaze inward, suggesting a descent into the subconscious or the emergence of hidden fears. The upper portion of the composition is slightly lighter, offering what appears to be a glimpse of light filtering through a cloudy sky, which casts dramatic light upon the scene below. Around the creature, faint, organic forms and possibly other creatures float in the shadowy ether, contributing to the overall sense of an unearthly realm where fantasy and reality blur.Redon's work often delved into themes of fantasy, exploring the terrain of nightmares and dreams. "And All Manner of Frightful Creatures Arise" is a quintessential representation of this exploration, inviting interpretations that wander through personal and collective fears, the mysteries of the unknown, and the power of the imagination to transform darkness into a source of profound insight and artistic beauty.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
