More about this artwork

Delve into the mystical visual narrative presented in Odilon Redon’s captivating lithograph "Armor". This artwork, dating back to 1891, showcases Redon's distinctive style that beautifully bridges the gap between realism and the artist's inner imaginings. In "Armor", the viewer is drawn to a side profile of a mysterious figure, predominantly encompassed in shadow but illuminated subtly on the face. The most striking feature is the headgear, which appears both as a protective armor and as an elaborate, almost otherworldly array. The spiky embellishments seem to blur the lines between functionality and fantastical design, suggesting a form that might exist in a dream or a vision rather than in everyday reality.Redon’s mastery in using contrasts is evident here; the deep blacks and delicate whites create an interplay of visibility and obscurity. It prompts one to ponder the nature of the armor — is it a shield guarding the figure from external forces, or does it symbolize a more introspective, psychological defense? This piece is a perfect representation of Redon’s ability to infuse emotion and narrative into his works, often leading the viewer into a contemplation of the unseen, the mystical, and the enigmatic realms of human perception."Armor" invites its audience to look beyond the visible, urging a deeper engagement with the personal interpretations and emotional responses it may evoke.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
