More about this artwork

"Contemplation" by Odilon Redon is a captivating work that invites the viewer into a moment of deep reflection and nuanced emotion. This painting portrays a group of three distinct figures, each depicted in profile, suggesting a shared yet introspective journey. The soft, watery hues of the background meld seamlessly into the shapes and colors of the figures, creating an otherworldly and dream-like quality that is characteristic of Redon's approach. The first figure appears contemplative and serene, with a gentle blue tone that harmonizes with the mysterious landscape beyond. This figure, with a distinct and peaceful expression, seems to gaze out into an unseen distance, perhaps pondering deep, existential thoughts. Below, the second figure, enveloped in warm red with intricate detailing, adds a touch of intensity and passion to the composition. The presence of this figure introduces a dynamic contrast in both color and emotion. The third and smallest figure, closely aligned with the others, appears as if emerging from the shadows, symbolizing perhaps the nascent stages of thought or the younger self.In "Contemplation," Redon masterfully uses color and form to transcend the physical world, exploring the depths of human psyche and emotion.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
