More about this artwork

Artist: Konštantín BauerDate: 1924–1927Description:"Žena pod lampou," created by Konštantín Bauer between 1924 and 1927, is a striking depiction that blends elements of reality with emotional depth and atmospheric intensity. This monochromatic work features a woman sitting on what appears to be a stony ground or steps, bathed in the light emanating from a hanging lamp above. Her posture and the expression on her face convey a sense of introspection or melancholy, as she seems deep in thought or perhaps waiting for someone. The setting of the painting adds a dramatic tone, with a swirling, somewhat turbulent sky and stark, leafless trees in the background. The rough, expressive brushstrokes give the scene an almost turbulent feel, suggesting the possible turmoil in the woman's mind or the environment around her.The lamp plays a crucial role in this composition, not merely illuminating the woman but also serving as a symbolic beacon. It might signify hope, guidance, or enlightenment, contrasting with the potentially bleak or contemplative nature of the scene.Konštantín Bauer’s use of intense light and shadow dynamics, along with his textured application of ink, creates a palpable tension and a looming sense of mystery. "Žena pod lampou" invites viewers to ponder the story behind the woman’s thoughtful pose, offering a striking visual dialogue about solitude, contemplation, and possibly anticipation. This painting is a beautiful example of Bauer’s work, capturing the complexities of human emotion and the subtle interplay between light and dark.
