More about this artwork

Dive into the deep, dark world of Odilon Redon with "C’est le Diable", an evocative lithograph that encapsulates the artist’s fascination with the mystical and the macabre. This artwork, created in 1888, stands out as a powerful example of Redon's unique approach to symbolism, employing dark tones and intriguing forms to provoke thought and emotion. The image is stark and compelling, dominated by shadows and a central figure that is both haunting and elusive. This figure, enveloped in darkness, reaches towards a bright, almost ethereal light source at the bottom of the composition. The contrast between the deep blacks and the illuminated hand draws the viewer into a narrative of struggle between light and dark, visible and hidden."C’est le Diable" translates to "It is the Devil", a title that suggests an exploration of themes such as evil, the unknown, and perhaps personal turmoil. Redon's work often delved into the realm of nightmares and dreams, pushing the boundaries of the visible to explore what lies beyond ordinary perception.Perfect for those with a penchant for the gothic or a love of psychological depth in art, this lithograph is not just a visual experience but a dive into the depths of human emotion and the eternal conflict between darkness and light.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
