More about this artwork

"In My Dream I Saw in the Sky a Face of Mystery" by Odilon Redon is an evocative piece that transcends mere visual interpretation, inviting viewers into a world of psychological depth and surreal imagery. Created in 1885, this work exemplifies Redon's unique ability to blend dreamlike elements with a gripping, emotional reality. The painting presents a face that appears to emerge from the vastness of the sky, its features marked with an intense and penetrating gaze that seems to confront the viewer directly. The shadowy tones and textured strokes contribute to an atmosphere of enigma and introspection. This face in the sky, oversized and brooding, dominates the composition, embodying the mysterious and often incomprehensible nature of dreams.Redon's mastery in using charcoal allows for a dynamic range of black and white shades, adding a dramatic and almost mystical quality to the artwork. The face is rendered with a realism that starkly contrasts with the abstract and indistinct background, highlighting the isolation and significance of the spectral visage. This piece is not just a mere depiction of a dream but is a profound exploration of the subconscious, the feelings of awe mixed with dread, and the human quest for meaning in the unknown.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
