More about this artwork

"La Becquée," a captivating work by Swiss-born French artist Théophile Alexandre Steinlen, epitomizes the vibrant urban life of Paris around the turn of the 20th century. Known for his art that frequently graced the streets and cafés of Montmartre, Steinlen in this piece explores an intimate moment amidst the bustling city environment. The painting pulls us into a tender scene between a young couple, lost in a private world carved out within the busy streets. The man, dressed in a conventional dark suit and matching hat, draws close to the woman, who leans into him lovingly. Her attire, a striking orange gown complemented by a creatively adorned hat, not only contrasts with the man's somber outfit but also adds a lively flair to the composition. Her face, showing a gentle affection, is turned towards him, suggesting trust and intimacy.Around them, the city life continues unabated. Other figures in the background, sketched with less detail, represent the typical crowd of a busy Parisian street, each absorbed in their endeavors. The light sketchiness of these figures contrasts sharply with the detailed rendering of the couple, highlighting the focal point of the artwork.Through "La Becquée," Steinlen not only captures the essence of romantic Paris but also showcases his talent in using color and form to draw attention to the central theme of an artwork—the personal connection shared in a fleeting moment, amidst the perpetual motion of urban life.

Théophile Alexandre Steinlen, was a Swiss-born French Art Nouveau painter and printmaker.

Born in Lausanne, Steinlen studied at the University of Lausanne before taking a job as a designer trainee at a textile mill in Mulhouse in eastern France. In his early twenties he was still developing his skills as a painter when he and his wife Emilie were encouraged by the painter François Bocion to move to the artistic community in the Montmartre Quarter of Paris. Once there, Steinlen was befriended by the painter Adolphe Willette who introduced him to the artistic crowd at Le Chat Noir that led to his commissions to do poster art for the cabaret owner/entertainer, Aristide Bruant and other commercial enterprises.
