More about this artwork

"Ornament met cirkel en kruis" by Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita, created in 1905, is an intriguing exploration of geometric shapes and contrasts. This artwork showcases de Mesquita’s unique style, characterized by a keen grasp of symmetry and the striking use of black and white to create depth and dimension. In the center of the composition, a bold cross is surrounded by a circle, both of which are fundamental elements in design that convey stability and continuity. The cross is segmented into four distinct parts, each filled with meticulously detailed patterns that resemble the textures of woven fabric. The circle acts not only as a boundary but also as a connector, linking all elements of the cross and emphasizing unity in the artwork.Surrounding the central motifs are dynamic triangular forms and rays that seem to burst outward. These elements lend a sense of movement and energy, contrasting with the stillness of the cross and circle at the center.De Mesquita's use of line and texture invites viewers to ponder the interplay between light, shadow, and form. "Ornament met cirkel en kruis" is not just a display of geometric beauty but also a testament to the artist's ability to transform simple shapes into a composition full of life and meaning.
