More about this artwork

Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita’s ethereal woodcut, "Bladbegonia" (1920), captivates the viewer with its richly textured detail and profound sense of tranquility. This artwork presents a close-up portrayal of begonia leaves unfolding elegantly from the shadows into light. The use of light and shadow masterfully accentuates the rippling, intricate patterns of the leaves, offering a near tactile experience. The monochromatic palette helps to emphasize the geometric and organic forms, making the leaves appear both delicate and dynamic.De Mesquita’s precision in woodcut technique is apparent, as each line serves to enhance the overall depth and texture of the composition. This piece not only illustrates the artist’s adept skill and innovative approach to printmaking but also reflects his profound appreciation for the natural world’s quiet beauty.
