More about this artwork

In the striking black and white composition of Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita's "Entre ces trois mon coeur balance," the viewer encounters a visually compelling narrative. Created in 1930, this woodcut print reveals Mesquita’s distinctive approach to form and expressionism. The artwork features three enigmatic figures engaged in a dramatic encounter. Each character is depicted with exaggerated, stylized features that contribute to an intense, almost theatrical atmosphere. The figure in the center holds what appears to be a document or a frame, which becomes the focal point, drawing the viewer's eye and suggesting a moment of significant decision or revelation. The title of the work, "Entre ces trois mon coeur balance," translates to "Between these three my heart is torn," hinting at an underlying story of conflict, choice, or judgment among the depicted individuals. The stark contrasts and the bold lines typical of woodcut art enhance the sense of an unfolding drama, inviting viewers to ponder the relationships and tensions present within this frozen moment.Through "Entre ces trois mon coeur balance," Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita masterfully mixes abstract stylization with emotional depth, making it a captivating piece that engages the imagination and invites diverse interpretations.
