More about this artwork

"Profil De Femme Avec Fleurs," created around 1890 by the symbolist artist Odilon Redon, is a compelling and enigmatic piece that gracefully intertwines elements of the natural world with the human form. This artwork showcases Redon's fascination with the intangible and the mysterious. The painting features the side profile of a woman, her gaze directed upwards in serene contemplation. Her features are finely detailed, embodying a sense of ethereal beauty and quietude.Set against a dream-like background, delicate flowers and foliage appear to emerge from the darkness around her, suggesting a deep connection between the woman and nature. The soft, almost misty texture of the work, achieved through Redon's masterful use of charcoal, adds to the overall mystical and ephemeral quality of the painting. The juxtaposition of the woman's clear, contemplative profile with the ambiguous, flower-speckled surroundings invites viewers into a world where reality blends with fantasy. The piece doesn't just portray a woman; it evokes a contemplation on femininity, nature, and the inner realms of the psyche.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
