More about this artwork

Welcome to a mesmerizing glimpse into the dreamlike world of Odilon Redon through one of his most captivating works, "Violette Heymann" from 1910. This painting is a compelling example of Redon's unique ability to blend reality with the ethereal. In "Violette Heymann," we observe a young woman seated in a dignified, yet relaxed posture, her profile elegantly turned towards the viewer. The woman, clothed in a subtle, soft green dress with delicate white lace, exudes a serene composure. Her expression, calm and introspective, invites viewers to contemplate her thoughts and emotions.Surrounding her, and perhaps the most striking feature of this painting, is a vibrant and fantastical array of flowers and foliage that seem to burst from the background, enveloping her in a colorful, almost otherworldly aura. The floral elements, rendered with an explosion of colors and textures, suggest a dynamic contrast to the woman's tranquility.Redon's use of pastel hues creates a soft, almost misty atmosphere, allowing the vivid colors of the flowers to shine while simultaneously casting a dream-like quality over the scene. This juxtaposition of realism in the subject’s portrayal and the impressionist approach to the surrounding elements typifies Redon’s Symbolist inclinations, where the depiction of the visible world is laden with deeper meanings and emotional resonance."Violette Heymann" invites viewers to delve into a world that transcends the ordinary, offering a momentary escape into the sublime and the beautiful.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
