More about this artwork

"October (1882)" by Carl Larsson captures the essence of a tranquil fall day through its depiction of a serene garden scene. In this evocative watercolor, we observe a woman dressed in a modest blue work dress and headscarf. She stands in the middle of a lush garden, laden with the bounties of autumn. Her posture is slightly bent as she carries a large basket, hinting at the weight of her harvest. Around her, the garden is alive with an array of vegetables; prominently displayed are robust pumpkins adding vibrant bursts of orange to the earthy tones that dominate the palette. The background features rustic houses with subdued colors that harmonize with the sandy path and the lush greenery, suggesting the painting might be set in a rural or semi-rural location. Soft shadows and diffused light suggest the gentleness of an autumn afternoon, a peaceful moment perfectly frozen in time.Larsson's skill in watercolor is evident in the delicate rendering of the foliage and the detailed texture of the vegetation and buildings. This painting is not just a visual treat but also a narrative of hard work and the rewards harvested during the fall season. It invokes a feeling of nostalgia and appreciation for the simple, labor-intensive routines that connect humankind to nature.
