More about this artwork

Welcome to another exquisite showcase on our art website. Today, we present the wondrous "Portrait of Tage Thiel" painted in 1915 by the acclaimed Swedish artist Carl Larsson. This remarkable artwork captures the essence of Jugendstil, the Scandinavian take on Art Nouveau, known for its detailed and decorative style. In this portrait, we are drawn into a serene, well-lit setting that features young Tage Thiel standing by a stair railing. Tage, with his thoughtful gaze and slightly parted lips, stands enveloped in a striking blue robe adorned with a golden pattern that radiates against the soft indoor lighting. The background of the portrait enhances its serene mood; a warmly lit windowpane decorated with delicate curtains and revealing a wintry scene outside. Beside Tage, a tall, thriving plant stands proudly in a simple terracotta pot, adding a touch of nature’s endurance to the interior. Notable too is the toy train on a small table, perhaps a personal treasure of Tage, which contributes to the narrative of childhood in this art piece.Carl Larsson’s technique pays wonderful attention to detail—the grain of the wood on the banister, the texture of the robe, and the reflective surfaces speak volumes of his mastery in capturing various materials. The initials ‘C.L.’ and the year '1915' positioned discreetly at the bottom right corner remind us of Larsson's humble signature on his works. This painting not only illustrates Larsson's skillful brushwork and color use but also his ability to convey deep, emotional undercurrents through seemingly tranquil domestic scenes.
