More about this artwork

This evocative piece, titled "Illustration to 'Singoalla, The Wind Is My Lover'" by the Swedish painter Carl Larsson, brings to life a haunting scene from Viktor Rydberg's romantic novel "Singoalla." Created in 1894, this work is a fine example of Larsson's skill in narrative art.The painting captures a moment of deep emotion and storytelling through its intricate monochrome details. At the forefront, an aging man appears prominently, draped in a heavy cloak, standing in a wooden rowboat that gently touches the shore. His face marked by time, he gazes intensely out of the frame, as if caught in a moment of contemplation or sorrow. In the background, one can observe a younger figure engaged in a mysterious activity by the water’s edge, adding a layer of intrigue. The setting is exquisitely detailed with lush forest and rugged terrain surrounding the figures, suggesting a remote, natural locale that complements the narrative's mystical and wild spirit.Carl Larsson's use of light and shadow, combined with the dynamic composition, invites the viewer to ponder the story's context and the emotions of these characters.
