More about this artwork

Step into the vibrant world of modern art with Georges Valmier's remarkable painting, "Collection décors et couleurs Pl.15." Created in 1930, this work is a captivating example of abstract art from the early 20th century. Valmier, a notable figure in the Cubist movement, provides a visual exploration of shape and color that continues to intrigue and inspire. The painting features an assortment of geometric forms and rich textures that create a dynamic composition. In the central and larger panel of the artwork, various abstract elements such as curves, angles, and waves intertwine, rendered in bold colors like blues, browns, and blacks, accented by touches of cream and white. This arrangement gives the viewer a sense of depth and movement, as if the shapes themselves are in a gentle state of flux.Below this central tableau, two smaller panels present their distinct motifs, each a microcosm of abstract interpretation. On the left, dark and light blue shapes are juxtaposed with beige, appearing to slide past one another, suggesting a playful dynamism. On the right, elements reminiscent of the larger panel reappear, creating a visual echo that reinforces the thematic coherence of the work."Collection décors et couleurs Pl.15" is not just a painting but a visual language set to decode the boundaries between form and color. Valmier's art speaks to the power of abstract expression and remains a profound piece for contemplation about the interplay of visual elements in space.

Georges Valmier (11 April 1885 – 25 March 1937) was a French painter. His work encompassed the great movements in the modern history of painting, starting with Impressionism in his early years, then Cubism which he discovered when he was around 25 years old, and finally Absstractionism from 1921. He also designed sets and costumes for theater and ballet, and models for fabrics, carpets, and other objects. His oil paintings do not exceed 300 in number, since Valmier died prematurely at the age of 51. His paintings were the culmination of many preparatory drafts in gouaches, multiple versions of which are works in themselves and reflect his penchant for colors and inventive shapes. Valmier was also a musician. He performed the works of Debussy, Ravel, Fauré, and Satie at major concerts and in churches, and had a decisive influence on the career of André Jolivet.
