More about this artwork

13' by Georges Valmier""Collection decors et couleurs Pl.13," created in 1930 by Georges Valmier, exemplifies the artist’s knack for merging geometric abstraction with a vibrant confluence of colors. This painting is a testament to Valmier’s unique style, which plays with form and tonality to create almost orchestral compositions on canvas. The painting presents an abstracted figure, which can be interpreted as a fusion of the human form with mask-like and possibly mechanical elements, creating an otherworldly appearance. The figure stands prominently against a richly textured backdrop of rectilinear and angular forms, which together suggest an undefined, multidimensional space.Valmier’s palette is a playful but carefully considered assortment of bold colors—greens, oranges, blues, and purples—each applied in blocks that echo the vibrant jazz and exuberant culture of the early 20th century. The use of black contours and white highlights introduces a dynamic contrast that enhances the figure's volume and the overall depth of the composition. This artwork is not only a stunning visual experience but also an invitation to explore the relationship between color, shape, and interpretation. "Collection decors et couleurs Pl.13" remains a captivating example of how abstract art can evoke emotion and intrigue, transcending the limits of traditional pictorial representation.

Georges Valmier (11 April 1885 – 25 March 1937) was a French painter. His work encompassed the great movements in the modern history of painting, starting with Impressionism in his early years, then Cubism which he discovered when he was around 25 years old, and finally Absstractionism from 1921. He also designed sets and costumes for theater and ballet, and models for fabrics, carpets, and other objects. His oil paintings do not exceed 300 in number, since Valmier died prematurely at the age of 51. His paintings were the culmination of many preparatory drafts in gouaches, multiple versions of which are works in themselves and reflect his penchant for colors and inventive shapes. Valmier was also a musician. He performed the works of Debussy, Ravel, Fauré, and Satie at major concerts and in churches, and had a decisive influence on the career of André Jolivet.
