More about this artwork

"La Touques, le matin" (1889) is an evocative painting by the French artist Eugène Boudin, known for his landscapes and for being one of the first French artists to paint outdoors. Captured in this work is a tranquil morning scene along the Touques River, a locale commonly frequented by Boudin, who was celebrated for his detailed portrayal of skies and marine environments. This painting depicts a group of figures beside the river, engaged in daily activities which likely include washing and gathering at the water's edge. These figures, rendered with loose brush strokes that emphasize movement and the fleeting nature of the moment, are set against a backdrop of calm waters and moored boats, suggesting the livelihoods tied to this serene river.Boudin’s mastery in painting skies is evident here, with a vast expanse of cloud-covered sky reflecting the early morning light and setting a peaceful tone over the entire scene. The soft, diffuse light and the muted palette of blues, grays, and earth tones create a sense of harmony and quietude.

Eugène Louis Boudin (12 July 1824 – 8 August 1898) was one of the first French landscape painters to paint outdoors. Boudin was a marine painter, and expert in the rendering of all that goes upon the sea and along its shores. His pastels, summary and economic, garnered the splendid eulogy of Baudelaire; and Corot called him the "King of the skies".
