More about this artwork

02"Dive into the abstract complexity of Georges Valmier's "Collection décors et couleurs Pl.02," a captivating painting filled with vibrant geometrical forms and intriguing patterns. Created in 1930, this artwork showcases Valmier's exceptional skill in aligning cubism with abstract sensibilities, forming a visual dialogue between color and shape. The painting consists of several panels, each a separate composition but unified by their meticulous arrangement and complementary tonalities. Rich shades of blue, green, red, and ochre interplay with black and white, creating a harmonious look that both attracts and pleases the eye. Within each panel, geometric shapes like triangles, circles, and rectangles interlock or float freely, often imbued with smaller, textural details such as checkerboard patterns, stripes, and dotted lines.Valmier masterfully uses color blocking and varied textures to create depth and movement, making the flat, two-dimensional surface come alive. This array of forms and colors showcases Valmier's adeptness at blending the decorative with the dynamic, crafting a work that is as much a feast for the senses as it is a cerebral exploration of abstraction."Collection décors et couleurs Pl.02" not only reflects Valmier's artistic prowess but also captures the essence of a creative period where art was rapidly evolving. Each element within the piece contributes to a larger symphony of design and color, making it an exemplary model of how abstract and cubist principles can coalesce into a stunning, impactful composition.

Georges Valmier (11 April 1885 – 25 March 1937) was a French painter. His work encompassed the great movements in the modern history of painting, starting with Impressionism in his early years, then Cubism which he discovered when he was around 25 years old, and finally Absstractionism from 1921. He also designed sets and costumes for theater and ballet, and models for fabrics, carpets, and other objects. His oil paintings do not exceed 300 in number, since Valmier died prematurely at the age of 51. His paintings were the culmination of many preparatory drafts in gouaches, multiple versions of which are works in themselves and reflect his penchant for colors and inventive shapes. Valmier was also a musician. He performed the works of Debussy, Ravel, Fauré, and Satie at major concerts and in churches, and had a decisive influence on the career of André Jolivet.
