More about this artwork

Capturing the humble and tranquil nature of rural landscapes, "Het knollenveld" by Camille Pissarro reflects a deep appreciation for the harmonious rhythms of nature. This compelling etching portrays a vibrant turnip field, lush and sprawling under a canopy of expressive lines. In the etching, the foreground is filled with an abundance of leafy turnips, each carefully detailed to show the texture and vitality of the crops. A spindly tree, its branches reaching outwards, anchors the scene and draws the viewer's eye towards the center. Beyond it, a classic rural windmill stands elegantly, its presence gently hinting at human life intersecting with nature. The detailed rendering of natural elements underscores Pissarro's characteristic focus on rural labor and agricultural settings. The monochrome palette emphasizes contrasts of light and shadow, highlighting the organic forms, and conveying both the beauty and toil embedded in rural life.

Blessed are they who see beautiful things in humble places where other people see nothing. — Camille Pissarro

Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) was born on St.Thomas (now the US Virgin Islands) to a Portuguese father and a Dominican mother. He went to Paris to study art at Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He was an early pioneer of pointillism and neo-impressionism and later became a mentor of many famous impressionist painters including Cezanne, Manet, Renoir, and Gauguin. His paintings depicted rural and urban French landscapes and lifestyle. Many of his works politically captured images of peasants and laborers. Today, he is considered the father of impressionism.
