More about this artwork

Exploring the boundaries of abstraction and figuration, Georges Valmier's "The Cattle on the Mountain" is a captivating example of Cubism from the early 20th century. Painted in 1922, this piece invites viewers into an almost dreamlike landscape where colors and shapes intermingle to hint at the serene presence of cattle on a mountain. At a glance, the painting is a harmony of geometric forms and soft, soothing colors that blend together in a circular composition, echoing the natural curves of a landscape. The topography of the piece is represented abstractly with interlocking shapes in shades of blue, yellow, green, black, and brown. Each form contributes to a balanced, dynamic composition that seems to pulse with a gentle rhythm, possibly mimicking the peaceful grazing of cattle.Valmier employs both rounded and sharply angular shapes, creating a visual tension that captures the unpredictability and ruggedness of mountain terrain. These elements collectively suggest the outlines of cattle, integrated into the landscape in such a way that they seem both distinct and a part of the mountain itself."The Cattle on the Mountain" is not just a visual experience but an invitation to re-imagine the way we perceive the natural world through the lens of Cubism. It stands as a testament to Valmier's innovative techniques and his ability to convey a traditional subject through the modernist vocabulary of fragmented forms and vibrant colors.

Georges Valmier (11 April 1885 – 25 March 1937) was a French painter. His work encompassed the great movements in the modern history of painting, starting with Impressionism in his early years, then Cubism which he discovered when he was around 25 years old, and finally Absstractionism from 1921. He also designed sets and costumes for theater and ballet, and models for fabrics, carpets, and other objects. His oil paintings do not exceed 300 in number, since Valmier died prematurely at the age of 51. His paintings were the culmination of many preparatory drafts in gouaches, multiple versions of which are works in themselves and reflect his penchant for colors and inventive shapes. Valmier was also a musician. He performed the works of Debussy, Ravel, Fauré, and Satie at major concerts and in churches, and had a decisive influence on the career of André Jolivet.
