More about this artwork

11" by Georges ValmierIn Georges Valmier's striking 1930 piece, "Collection décors et couleurs Pl.11," the viewer is taken on a captivating journey through an abstract landscape structured by a bold array of geometric shapes and a refined color palette. This painting exemplifies Valmier's attachment to Cubism, a movement that revolutionized European painting and sculpture in the early 20th century by emphasizing an abstract form over lifelike representation. The artwork is divided into two distinct sections, each layering flat planes and assorted shapes to create a complex interplay of depth and perspective. In the upper segment, mysterious figures navigate through a fragmented, architectural realm. These characters, simplified to their geometric essence, appear enigmatic against the angular blocks and curves that define their world.Below, the composition transitions into smoother, softer forms where circles and flowing curves dominate, suggesting a contrast or perhaps a continuity to the scene above. A palette of muted earth tones alongside pastels enhances the overall dreamlike quality, providing a calmness to the dynamic arrangement of elements.Valmier’s work not only captures the visual rhythm and vitality of Cubism but also infuses it with his unique sense of harmony and composition. "Collection décors et couleurs Pl.11" remains a compelling exploration of color and form, inviting viewers to decipher its abstract beauty and inherent narrative potential.

Georges Valmier (11 April 1885 – 25 March 1937) was a French painter. His work encompassed the great movements in the modern history of painting, starting with Impressionism in his early years, then Cubism which he discovered when he was around 25 years old, and finally Absstractionism from 1921. He also designed sets and costumes for theater and ballet, and models for fabrics, carpets, and other objects. His oil paintings do not exceed 300 in number, since Valmier died prematurely at the age of 51. His paintings were the culmination of many preparatory drafts in gouaches, multiple versions of which are works in themselves and reflect his penchant for colors and inventive shapes. Valmier was also a musician. He performed the works of Debussy, Ravel, Fauré, and Satie at major concerts and in churches, and had a decisive influence on the career of André Jolivet.
