More about this artwork

Christ Appears to Mary Magdalene is a compelling example of Peter Paul Rubens' mastery in depicting biblical stories with emotional depth and dynamism. Painted between 1610 and 1690, this work illustrates the profoundly moving encounter between Christ and Mary Magdalene after his resurrection, a scene often referred to as "Noli me tangere," meaning "touch me not."In this artwork, Rubens captures the pivotal moment when Mary Magdalene, who has just recognized Jesus, reaches out to him. Jesus, clad in a vibrant red robe, guides her gesticulation away as he leans on a spade, symbolizing his guise as a gardener and perhaps indicating his earthly toil and heavenly purpose. The gesture and Jesus’ gentle expression convey his message that the time for earthly attachments has passed and that his followers must now seek a spiritual connection. The setting of the painting enhances the narrative’s ethereal quality. The soft, diffused light and the lush greenery that surrounds the figures create an atmosphere of both tranquility and revelation. Mary Magdalene’s attire and demeanor express her mixed emotions of awe, recognition, and the difficulty of letting go.Rubens’ use of color, light, and fluid brushwork not only highlights the dramatic intensity of the scene but also evokes the viewer's empathy for Mary’s profound experience.

Sir Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish artist and diplomat from the Duchy of Brabant in the Southern Netherlands (modern-day Belgium). He is considered the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition. Rubens's highly charged compositions reference erudite aspects of classical and Christian history. His unique and immensely popular Baroque style emphasized movement, colour, and sensuality, which followed the immediate, dramatic artistic style promoted in the Counter-Reformation. Rubens was a painter producing altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. He was also a prolific designer of cartoons for the Flemish tapestry workshops and of frontispieces for the publishers in Antwerp.
