More about this artwork

"Venus Lamenting Adonis" is a compelling drawing by Peter Paul Rubens, created around 1608-1612, capturing a poignant moment in classical mythology. This work illustrates the deep anguish of Venus, the goddess of love, as she mourns over the body of Adonis, her beloved. Adonis, a mortal youth of great beauty, has tragically died after being gored by a wild boar, an event that Venus had feared and forewarned him about. In Rubens' depiction, the emotions are vividly conveyed through the dynamic lines and the dramatic poses of the figures. Venus, depicted with powerful, sweeping curves, is shown in a state of despair as she cradles Adonis. Her posture and the intense expression on her face evoke a deep sense of sorrow and loss. The figure of Adonis, limp and passive, contrasts sharply with the animated form of Venus, highlighting the finality of death and the poignant disparity between the living and the dead. The artist's mastery is evident in the fluidity and confidence of the strokes, which bring this tragic scene to life with remarkable energy and emotion. Despite the simplicity of the materials—a drawing on paper—Rubens’ skill ensures that the theme of love, beauty, and tragic loss resonates deeply.

Sir Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish artist and diplomat from the Duchy of Brabant in the Southern Netherlands (modern-day Belgium). He is considered the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition. Rubens's highly charged compositions reference erudite aspects of classical and Christian history. His unique and immensely popular Baroque style emphasized movement, colour, and sensuality, which followed the immediate, dramatic artistic style promoted in the Counter-Reformation. Rubens was a painter producing altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. He was also a prolific designer of cartoons for the Flemish tapestry workshops and of frontispieces for the publishers in Antwerp.
