More about this artwork

This captivating masterpiece by Peter Paul Rubens, titled "Saint Ives of Treguier, Patron of Lawyers, Defender of Widows and Orphans," eloquently illustrates the compassionate virtues of Saint Ives, who is celebrated as the patron saint of lawyers. Painted between 1615 and 1616, Rubens' work breathes life into the narrative of Saint Ives' unwavering commitment to justice and mercy. In this painting, Saint Ives is portrayed in a richly colored red robe, standing majestically as he interacts with a group of the underprivileged—a mother and her children. His commanding yet benevolent presence is underlined by his attention towards these figures, possibly discussing matters of legal importance, as indicated by the document he holds. His demeanor conveys both authority and empathy, elements that define his legacy as a defender of the helpless. The composition is beautifully balanced with a cherub above, crowning Saint Ives with a laurel wreath, symbolizing honor and triumph. This angelic figure not only accentuates the saint's divine approval but also enhances the celestial atmosphere of the scene. The mother, depicted in a modest attire, gazes hopefully at Saint Ives, while her children, portrayed with innocence and vulnerability, further invoke the viewer's empathy.Foreground elements such as an opulent but discarded book and a set of keys subtly allude to the saint's scholarly nature and his key role in unlocking solutions for the needy. The architectural elements and open background invite a sense of openness and possibility.

Sir Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish artist and diplomat from the Duchy of Brabant in the Southern Netherlands (modern-day Belgium). He is considered the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition. Rubens's highly charged compositions reference erudite aspects of classical and Christian history. His unique and immensely popular Baroque style emphasized movement, colour, and sensuality, which followed the immediate, dramatic artistic style promoted in the Counter-Reformation. Rubens was a painter producing altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. He was also a prolific designer of cartoons for the Flemish tapestry workshops and of frontispieces for the publishers in Antwerp.
