More about this artwork

Artist Peter Paul Rubens, renowned for his vivid and emotive Baroque style, masterfully captures the poignant theme of filial piety and compassion in his painting "Cimon and Pero (Roman Charity)." Dating back to the period between 1630 and 1640, this artwork delves into a touching story from Roman folklore that has resonated with audiences for centuries. The painting portrays the intense moment when Pero, a devoted daughter, secretly breastfeeds her elderly father, Cimon, to save him from starvation. Cimon had been imprisoned and sentenced to death by starvation, but Pero's act of selflessness and bravery provides him with the sustenance he needs. This act of mercy is not only a profound demonstration of filial love but also a striking commentary on human kindness transcending societal norms.Rubens' use of rich, deep color and dynamic composition enhances the emotional depth of the scene. Pero is dressed in a radiant red gown, symbolizing both love and sacrifice, which starkly contrasts with the bleak and shadowy prison cell. Cimon, depicted with a frail yet grateful expression, receives his daughter's gift with humility and profound relief. An additional layer of narrative intrigue is added by the presence of onlookers peering through a barred window in the background. Their expressions of surprise highlight the unusual nature of Pero's charity, yet also underscore the painting's moral message about the power of compassion."Cimon and Pero" remains a compelling example of Rubens' skillful blend of storytelling and artistry, inviting viewers to reflect on the depths of human kindness and familial bonds.

Sir Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish artist and diplomat from the Duchy of Brabant in the Southern Netherlands (modern-day Belgium). He is considered the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition. Rubens's highly charged compositions reference erudite aspects of classical and Christian history. His unique and immensely popular Baroque style emphasized movement, colour, and sensuality, which followed the immediate, dramatic artistic style promoted in the Counter-Reformation. Rubens was a painter producing altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. He was also a prolific designer of cartoons for the Flemish tapestry workshops and of frontispieces for the publishers in Antwerp.
