More about this artwork

This exquisite drawing by the celebrated Flemish artist Peter Paul Rubens, titled "Young Woman in Profile," dated around 1613, captures the delicate and introspective grace of a young woman. Employing soft and precise chalk strokes on paper, Rubens brings this portrait to life with a tender warmth that radiates from the subject. In the artwork, the young woman is depicted in profile, her gaze directed slightly upward, lending her a thoughtful, almost ethereal quality. Her features are rendered with the soft finesse characteristic of Rubens' skill with portraits. Her hair flows loosely, adding a natural and relaxed feel to the image, while her lightly sketched attire suggests a moment caught in everyday life. This drawing is not only a testament to Rubens' mastery of form and human anatomy but also to his ability to convey deep emotional and reflective states through simple yet powerful lines. The choice of material and the minimalistic approach highlight the artist’s focus on capturing the essence of the subject's character and mood.

Sir Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish artist and diplomat from the Duchy of Brabant in the Southern Netherlands (modern-day Belgium). He is considered the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition. Rubens's highly charged compositions reference erudite aspects of classical and Christian history. His unique and immensely popular Baroque style emphasized movement, colour, and sensuality, which followed the immediate, dramatic artistic style promoted in the Counter-Reformation. Rubens was a painter producing altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. He was also a prolific designer of cartoons for the Flemish tapestry workshops and of frontispieces for the publishers in Antwerp.
