More about this artwork

"The Entombment" by Peter Paul Rubens, painted in 1612, is a profound depiction of grief and reverence surrounding the biblical narrative of Christ's burial after his crucifixion. This painting masterfully captures the emotional intensity and physical weight of the moment. In the composition, the lifeless body of Christ is cradled by three mournful figures, each expressing their sorrow in uniquely poignant ways. On the left, a younger male, clad in a rich red robe, supports Christ's head with a tender yet strained expression, emphasizing the burden and heartache of the moment. To the right, a woman in deep blue, likely Mary, Christ's mother, looks upwards, her face a mask of agony and despair. Her outstretched arm and downturned gaze dramatize her overwhelming sorrow. Beside her, another older woman, cloaked in a simple, pale garment, wipes her tears, her face etched with pain. The dramatic chiaroscuro, the stark lighting contrasts, and the vivid realism of the figures’ expressions and the textures of their garments, are characteristic of Rubens' style, which brings a heightened emotional depth to the scene. The use of color is particularly striking, guiding the viewer's eye across the painting and accentuating the physical and emotional heaviness of the scene.

Sir Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish artist and diplomat from the Duchy of Brabant in the Southern Netherlands (modern-day Belgium). He is considered the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition. Rubens's highly charged compositions reference erudite aspects of classical and Christian history. His unique and immensely popular Baroque style emphasized movement, colour, and sensuality, which followed the immediate, dramatic artistic style promoted in the Counter-Reformation. Rubens was a painter producing altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. He was also a prolific designer of cartoons for the Flemish tapestry workshops and of frontispieces for the publishers in Antwerp.
