More about this artwork

Welcome to an ethereal depiction of celestial harmony in Peter Paul Rubens' enchanting oil sketch, "Music Making Angels," created around 1626-1627. This radiant work captures a host of angels engaged in musical play, evoking a sense of divine music that transcends the earthly realm. The painting bursts with movement and energy, as angels of various sizes fill the canvas, each one intricately detailed and contributing to the overall sense of joyous activity. At the center, a prominent angel clad in a flowing red robe masterfully plays a cello, serving as a visual anchor in the whirlwind of jubilation. To her right, another angel gently strums a lute, her attention focused and serene, contrasting with the playful interactions of the cherubic smaller angels who surround her.On the left, an angel with a lute sings passionately, while above him, another flies while playing a flute, their figures almost merging with the swirling clouds that envelop them. The composition’s upper portion is alive with cherubs, some blowing trumpets and others floating in the golden light that beams down from the top of the sketch, adding a divine glow that highlights the figures’ expressions of bliss.Rubens' masterful use of light and shadow, combined with his fluid brushstrokes, gives this sketch a lively, almost improvisational quality, as if capturing a fleeting heavenly concert. This piece not only showcases Rubens' skill as a painter but also reflects the Baroque era's fascination with dynamic compositions and dramatic use of light."Music Making Angels" invites viewers to pause and contemplate the beauty of celestial music, representing not just a visual feast but an evocation of the harmonious potential of the universe.

Sir Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish artist and diplomat from the Duchy of Brabant in the Southern Netherlands (modern-day Belgium). He is considered the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition. Rubens's highly charged compositions reference erudite aspects of classical and Christian history. His unique and immensely popular Baroque style emphasized movement, colour, and sensuality, which followed the immediate, dramatic artistic style promoted in the Counter-Reformation. Rubens was a painter producing altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. He was also a prolific designer of cartoons for the Flemish tapestry workshops and of frontispieces for the publishers in Antwerp.
