More about this artwork

Explore the fascinating mythological painting "Romulus and Remus" by Peter Paul Rubens, from the period 1615-1616. This masterpiece delves into the legendary story of the twin brothers who are considered the founders of Rome. The painting vividly captures the moment of their mythical upbringing by a she-wolf in a dark, lush forest, symbolizing the wild and foundational nature of their beginnings. In the foreground, the she-wolf is depicted with a nurturing demeanor as she lies next to the infant twins, Romulus and Remus, who are seen suckling. The twins are portrayed in a lively, realistic manner, highlighting their innocence and vulnerability in their formative moments. Adjacent to this central scene, an elderly man with a child on his lap is presented, suggesting a human connection and possibly hinting at future protection and guidance for the twins. To the right, adding a dynamic aspect to the composition, stands a figure with a comforting posture, possibly representing the shepherd Faustulus, who, according to the myth, discovered and later raised the twins. Above them, a woodpecker, associated with the god Mars in Roman mythology, pecks at a tree, symbolizing divine intervention and approval.Rubens’s exceptional use of color and detail not only breathes life into this fabled origin of Rome but also showcases his skill in blending drama with the tenderness of the nurturing scenes.

Sir Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish artist and diplomat from the Duchy of Brabant in the Southern Netherlands (modern-day Belgium). He is considered the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition. Rubens's highly charged compositions reference erudite aspects of classical and Christian history. His unique and immensely popular Baroque style emphasized movement, colour, and sensuality, which followed the immediate, dramatic artistic style promoted in the Counter-Reformation. Rubens was a painter producing altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. He was also a prolific designer of cartoons for the Flemish tapestry workshops and of frontispieces for the publishers in Antwerp.
