More about this artwork

The painting "Snow On Mount Ibuki" by Goyo Hashiguchi captures a serene and picturesque winter scene. In the foreground, a calm, partially frozen river reflects the pale blue hues of the sky and the outline of the bridge above it. This wooden bridge, replete with pedestrians clad in traditional Japanese attire, spans the river, connecting two parts of a village or small town. The scene is detailed and realistically rendered, showing a variety of traditional Japanese buildings, some with sloped roofs covered in a thick blanket of snow, which indicates the depth of the winter season. Beyond the cluster of buildings rises the majestic Mount Ibuki, gently dusted with snow, enhancing the cold yet tranquil atmosphere of the landscape. The sky is dotted with falling snowflakes, adding to the wintery ambiance and the overall quiet mood of the scene. The mixture of natural beauty with the subtle human activity provides a glimpse into a moment of daily life in a Japanese town during winter.Hashiguchi's careful attention to detail in the reflections, the texture of the snow on the structures, and the subtle gradations of light and shadow, all combine to make this painting not only a visual delight but also a narrative piece that invites viewers to ponder the quiet beauty of winter in rural Japan.
