More about this artwork

The painting titled "Buddha On The Borobudur" by Leo Gestel is a monochrome depiction focusing on a sculptural representation of Buddha. This artwork captures the serene and introspective essence typically associated with Buddha statues. The Buddha is depicted in a traditional meditative posture called "dhyana mudra," where the hands are placed on the lap with one on top of the other, palms facing up, conveying spiritual balance and tranquility. The technique used by Gestel is detailed and textural, utilizing a stippling method that effectively builds the statue's form through myriad tiny dots and marks. This creates a granular texture that emphasizes the stone material of the sculpture, evoking the tactile quality of the original statue located at the historical temple of Borobudur in Indonesia. The Buddha's facial expression is calm and composed, with hallmark features like elongated earlobes and curled hair, symbolizing his noble status and spiritual wisdom. The headwear likely represents a ushnisha, a three-dimensional oval at the top of the head of Buddha images, symbolizing his attainment of reliance in spiritual guide.Overall, the painting not only reflects the physical attributes of the Buddha statue but also attempts to capture the spiritual aura and cultural significance associated with such a sacred figure, resonating deeply with themes of peace and enlightenment.

Leo Gestel (1881–1941) was a Dutch visual artist, painter, and illustrator. His father was a director of an art school and his uncle painted with the famous Vincent van Gogh. He came across the Parisian avant-garde movement and developed his eclectic style through experimentation with various art forms including cubism, expressionism, futurism, and post-impressionism. He is considered one of the leading Dutch modernism artists, along with Piet Mondrian. The majority of Gestel’s work was lost in a fire.
