More about this artwork

This drawing by Leo Gestel, titled "Seven Pigeons," showcases a series of pigeon sketches depicted in various postures and settings. The artwork, executed in what appears to be pencil or charcoal, creatively captures the essence and dynamism of pigeons in motion and at rest. Each pigeon is rendered with attention to detail, illustrating not only their physical features but their differing expressions and attitudes. Starting from the top left, the pigeon is nestled within swirling forms that might represent air or clouds, giving a sense of its motion. Move next to the right, and you observe a pigeon framed with leaves, its beak open as if caught mid-coo. The pigeon in the top right corner exemplifies grace with its wings spread, depicted as it might appear in full flight. The central figures extend these motifs, and gestures vary from one bird to the next. One pigeon appears with a backdrop of leaves, enhancing its stance, while another is drawn amidst a sweep of bold strokes suggesting rapid movement or a chaotic environment.Overall, the image is unified by Gestel's delicate and fluid drawing style, creating a lively interaction between the pigeons and their surroundings. This gives the piece a whimsical, yet serene quality, reflecting not only the nature of the pigeons but also a broader artistic exploration of form and motion.

Leo Gestel (1881–1941) was a Dutch visual artist, painter, and illustrator. His father was a director of an art school and his uncle painted with the famous Vincent van Gogh. He came across the Parisian avant-garde movement and developed his eclectic style through experimentation with various art forms including cubism, expressionism, futurism, and post-impressionism. He is considered one of the leading Dutch modernism artists, along with Piet Mondrian. The majority of Gestel’s work was lost in a fire.
