More about this artwork

The artwork you're referring to, "Vrouwenkop" by Leo Gestel, appears to be a simplistic yet intriguing ink drawing rather than a painting. Leo Gestel, known for his modernist style, seems to have employed a minimalist technique to depict the head of a woman. The image predominantly features the profile view of a woman's head. Gestel uses crisscrossing and hatching lines to create both texture and shading, giving depth and form to the figure. Although the detailing is sparse, Gestel manages to convey the contours of the woman's head, neck, and hair effectively. The layout includes some annotations — possibly indicating directions regarding the orientation or viewing perspectives, such as "hoog," "basis," and "onder" which translate from Dutch to "high," "base," and "under" respectively. This could suggest that Gestel might have been planning or considering different aspects of the drawing during its creation. The style is marked by its abstract form and restrained use of lines, which is typical of Gestel's experimental approach to modern art. The artwork, embodying simplicity and artistic precision, offers a glimpse into Gestel's artistic exploration and interpretation of form and perspective.

Leo Gestel (1881–1941) was a Dutch visual artist, painter, and illustrator. His father was a director of an art school and his uncle painted with the famous Vincent van Gogh. He came across the Parisian avant-garde movement and developed his eclectic style through experimentation with various art forms including cubism, expressionism, futurism, and post-impressionism. He is considered one of the leading Dutch modernism artists, along with Piet Mondrian. The majority of Gestel’s work was lost in a fire.
