More about this artwork

This work by Leo Gestel, titled "Elephant On A Book," is a striking piece rendered predominantly in a monochromatic scheme and appears to use a technique similar to pen and ink, featuring dense, scribble-like strokes that create an intricate texture and depth. The image portrays an elephant balancing atop a horizontally positioned book. The elephant is depicted with a notable amount of detail and precision, especially in its wrinkled skin and muscular build, suggesting both weight and substance. Its trunk is raised upwards in a whimsical or possibly celebratory pose. The book beneath the elephant, while simpler in definition compared to the animal, is drawn with clear, discernible lines indicating the pages and cover, imparting a sense of solidity necessary to support the massive creature standing upon it.This artwork might embody various interpretations such as the power of knowledge, the juxtaposition of the elephant's enormity with the fragility of what seems like paper, or the absurdity and playfulness in seeing such a heavy animal delicately balanced on a thin object like a book. The use of straightforward black lines against a white background ensures that the viewer focuses entirely on the subject matter and its potential symbolism.

Leo Gestel (1881–1941) was a Dutch visual artist, painter, and illustrator. His father was a director of an art school and his uncle painted with the famous Vincent van Gogh. He came across the Parisian avant-garde movement and developed his eclectic style through experimentation with various art forms including cubism, expressionism, futurism, and post-impressionism. He is considered one of the leading Dutch modernism artists, along with Piet Mondrian. The majority of Gestel’s work was lost in a fire.
