More about this artwork

This painting by Leo Gestel, titled "Caricature of Leo Gestel and His Wife," features a whimsical and exaggerated portrayal of the artist and his spouse. It incorporates a playful approach to portraiture, using watercolor that enhances both the light-heartedness and the vibrant, flowing forms synonymous with caricature. In the painting, both figures are defined with exaggerated facial features that emphasize certain expressions and emotions. Leo Gestel is depicted with a large, prominent nose and a thoughtful, perhaps quizzical expression, denoted by his raised eyebrow and sideways glance. His wife is shown with long, wavy hair and a more subdued expression, her large eye seemingly introspective or distant. The background hints at a simplistic, almost childlike depiction of a landscape, with what appear to be sea and sailboats, beneath a bright red sun. This playful use of colors and simplified forms helps to create a light-hearted ambiance that seems to poke fun at the serious nature of traditional portraiture.Overall, the caricature captures a personal and humorous glance into the artist's life, reflecting both his artistic style and his intimate relationship with his wife, portrayed through a lens of affectionate satire.

Leo Gestel (1881–1941) was a Dutch visual artist, painter, and illustrator. His father was a director of an art school and his uncle painted with the famous Vincent van Gogh. He came across the Parisian avant-garde movement and developed his eclectic style through experimentation with various art forms including cubism, expressionism, futurism, and post-impressionism. He is considered one of the leading Dutch modernism artists, along with Piet Mondrian. The majority of Gestel’s work was lost in a fire.
