More about this artwork

The painting "Horses in Landscape" by Leo Gestel is a vibrant and expressionistic depiction of horses within a dynamic and somewhat abstracted natural setting. Gestel's use of color and form brings an energetic and almost dreamlike quality to the scene. The painting features several horses, each painted with distinct patterns and colors, suggesting movement and vitality. The horses appear in various poses, some standing and others in more dynamic stances, which enhances the lively atmosphere of the painting.Gestel employs bold, sweeping brushstrokes that contribute to the fluidity and motion of the composition. The background of the painting is rendered with equal expressiveness, using a mix of warm and cool tones that suggest elements like the sun, sky, and vegetation without strict adherence to realistic representation. This choice of style emphasizes an emotional and perceptual experience of the landscape rather than a literal one.Overall, the painting exudes a sense of freedom and natural beauty, characterized by Gestel's modernist approach to color and form, making "Horses in Landscape" a captivating example of early 20th-century European art.

Leo Gestel (1881–1941) was a Dutch visual artist, painter, and illustrator. His father was a director of an art school and his uncle painted with the famous Vincent van Gogh. He came across the Parisian avant-garde movement and developed his eclectic style through experimentation with various art forms including cubism, expressionism, futurism, and post-impressionism. He is considered one of the leading Dutch modernism artists, along with Piet Mondrian. The majority of Gestel’s work was lost in a fire.
