More about this artwork

The painting "Twee Badende Vrouwen En Een Rugfiguur" by Leo Gestel is a fascinating piece characterized by abstract forms and a harmonious interplay of colors. The artwork depicts three figures that are captured in different postures related to bathing. Notably, each figure is rendered with a distinct, individual color palette and style, which enhances their separation within the same space. On the left, one figure stands with her back turned towards the viewer, bending forward in a subdued green hue, suggesting a sense of introversion or contemplation. In the middle, another figure sits at a higher elevation, perhaps on a rock or ledge, rendered in a mix of soft pinks and blues, her gaze directed away from the viewer and towards the first figure. This middle figure conveys a relaxed or pensive mood, enhancing the tranquil theme of bathing. The figure on the right stands out with its robust, warm tones of brown and deep reds, and she holds her arms up as if fixing her hair. This pose communicates a moment of unabashed openness and comfort in her setting, contrasting with the more reserved postures of the other two.The background is minimally indicated but features abstract elements like rolling waves or hills that suggest an outdoor setting close to water, possibly lakeside or by the sea.Gestel's use of abstract shapes and a somewhat fragmented approach to form creates a dynamic and engaging composition.

Leo Gestel (1881–1941) was a Dutch visual artist, painter, and illustrator. His father was a director of an art school and his uncle painted with the famous Vincent van Gogh. He came across the Parisian avant-garde movement and developed his eclectic style through experimentation with various art forms including cubism, expressionism, futurism, and post-impressionism. He is considered one of the leading Dutch modernism artists, along with Piet Mondrian. The majority of Gestel’s work was lost in a fire.
