More about this artwork

The painting titled "Galopperend Paard" by Leo Gestel captures the dynamic motion of a galloping horse. This artwork portrays the horse in a heightened state of motion, emphasizing speed and energy. The horse’s body is rendered through a series of quick, expressive brushstrokes that convey both the texture of the horse’s coat and the swift movement. The choice of a monochromatic scheme highlights the form and motion rather than the color details, focusing the viewer's attention on the movement and anatomical features of the horse. The background is minimally detailed, featuring just a hint of ground beneath the horse’s hooves, which are depicted in mid-air, enhancing the feeling of speed and motion. The simplicity and roughness of the strokes in the ground and the horse give the work a raw, immediate quality, as if capturing a fleeting moment in time.Leo Gestel’s style here leans towards expressionism, focusing on emotional rendering rather than detailed realism, thus allowing viewers to feel the energy and motion in a visceral way. The overall composition is tight and focused, making the horse nearly fill the frame, which adds to the intense, dynamic feel of the artwork.

Leo Gestel (1881–1941) was a Dutch visual artist, painter, and illustrator. His father was a director of an art school and his uncle painted with the famous Vincent van Gogh. He came across the Parisian avant-garde movement and developed his eclectic style through experimentation with various art forms including cubism, expressionism, futurism, and post-impressionism. He is considered one of the leading Dutch modernism artists, along with Piet Mondrian. The majority of Gestel’s work was lost in a fire.
