More about this artwork

In the painting titled "Morning Glories" from The Flower Book by Edward Burne-Jones, we see a captivating and somewhat ethereal scene depicted within a circular frame. The artwork features three graceful figures, which appear to be female, draped in light, flowing garments that convey a sense of lightness and movement. These figures are elegantly interacting with or among lines that resemble the tendrils of morning glory flowers, which subtly suggests the theme and title of the painting. The background is composed of a soft, sky-like blue interspersed with white, evoking an early morning ambiance. The earth beneath the figures has a rugged texture, possibly representing a field or natural ground, enriched with tones of brown and hints of green, perhaps indicating vegetation or early morning dew.The overall impression is one of delicate tranquility and a connection to nature, rendered in a style that beautifully merges the figures with the thematic elements of morning glories, symbolizing rebirth or the start of a new day. Burne-Jones's use of soft lines and gentle coloration enhances the dreamy quality of the scene, inviting the viewer to reflect on the beauty and quietude of nature.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
