More about this artwork

This artwork, "Love Leading The Pilgrim - Study Of Birds: Finches," by Edward Burne-Jones, represents a series of studies of finch birds in various poses and actions, skillfully rendered on a textured, plain brown paper. The image features five individual finches, each captured in different poses that suggest movement and perhaps moments of flight or landing. Each bird is distinctively drawn, showcasing Burne-Jones's keen attention to detail and understanding of avian anatomy. The finches are rendered with a range of strokes and color tones that bring them to life with a sense of vibrancy and realism. The usage of colored pencils or pastels adds delicate color highlights to the birds, particularly evident in the varying shades of browns, oranges, and blacks. The neutral brown background allows these colors to stand out, emphasizing the birds and their dynamic postures.Overall, the composition is both a detailed study of bird morphology and behavior and a pleasing aesthetic arrangement, indicative of Burne-Jones's skills not only as a painter of human figures and mythical scenes but also in capturing the subtleties of nature in his works.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
