More about this artwork

This painting called "Red Flamingoes, Study For Book Concealing Coloration In The Animal Kingdom" by Abbott Handerson Thayer presents a vivid and abstract interpretation of flamingoes. The artwork prominently features rich, warm shades of orange and pink that dominate the canvas, illustrating the distinct form and coloration of flamingoes. These hues contrast sharply against the darker, almost black vegetation in the foreground, which could be suggesting the natural habitat of the flamingoes or their ability to blend into certain environments. The composition of the painting is quite abstract; the flamingoes are not depicted in a purely realistic manner but rather are stylized and simplified. The smooth washes of color that form the bodies of the flamingoes blend seamlessly into the background, and details like the eyes are merely indicated by darker spots. Thayer's use of both texture and soft color gradations suggests a depth, making the painting dynamic and emotionally resonant. The brushwork and minimalistic visual cues suggest movement and the ethereal nature of the birds, highlighting Thayer's focus on the essence and impression of the subjects rather than a detailed anatomical portrayal.Overall, Thayer's piece is both beautiful in its subtlety and powerful in its use of color and form to capture a moment, likely intending to explore themes of natural beauty and the fascinating phenomenon of camouflage within the animal kingdom.

Abbott Handerson Thayer (1849-1921) was an American artist, naturalist and teacher. He grew up in a wealthy Boston family and was a leader of the NY art world, selling portraits and allegorical figures to European Renaissance collectors. His art changed drastically when his wife died, when he moved to a colony of artists settled in Dublin, New Hampshire. He painted landscapes, delicate flowers, and idealistic paintings of women as angels and madonnas.
