More about this artwork

The painting "Caritas" by Abbott Handerson Thayer is a poignant depiction of maternal affection and altruistic love, which are central themes in Thayer’s body of work. The artwork features a central figure, a woman standing with a serene, almost ethereal expression. She stands against a dark, leafy background which provides a strong contrast to her light, flowing garment that drapes gracefully over her body. This white robe evokes a sense of purity and spiritual tranquility.Flanking the central figure are two young children, looking up towards her reverently. Both children are nude, which traditionally symbolizes innocence in Western art. The child to her left seems contemplative or perhaps a bit melancholy, while the child on the right gazes upward with a look of trust and assurance. Their positioning and gaze towards the woman suggest a protective and nurturing relationship.Thayer's use of soft lighting focuses on the figures, highlighting their innocence and the protective grace of the woman. The overall composition, with the figures aligned vertically and framed by the dark foliage, creates a strong focal point around the woman, emphasizing her role as a caregiver. "Caritas," translating to charity or love from Latin, encapsulates the virtues of love, kindness, and selflessness, aligning perfectly with the visual narrative Thayer sets forth in this tender composition.

Abbott Handerson Thayer (1849-1921) was an American artist, naturalist and teacher. He grew up in a wealthy Boston family and was a leader of the NY art world, selling portraits and allegorical figures to European Renaissance collectors. His art changed drastically when his wife died, when he moved to a colony of artists settled in Dublin, New Hampshire. He painted landscapes, delicate flowers, and idealistic paintings of women as angels and madonnas.
