More about this artwork

In this serene painting by Christen Købke, we see a tranquil view of a part of the bay area at Kalkbrænderiet (lime burner in English), as viewed from a strand promenade to the north. The painting is notable for its soft, blushing sky which casts a gentle pink hue across the scene, implying either a setting or rising sun that bathes the landscape in warm light. The composition is balanced and peaceful, with tall, slender trees framing the left side of the canvas, leading the viewer's eye along the shoreline toward a panoramic view of the bay. In the foreground, we see a mix of wild vegetation and a calm water’s edge, suggesting a natural and somewhat untamed seaside environment.Further into the scene, the bay itself is dotted with small boats, which add activity and life to the otherwise still landscape. On the right side across the bay, small architectural structures are visible, possibly houses or buildings associated with the lime burning industry, which provide a sense of human presence without overpowering the natural beauty of the scene. The overall mood of the painting is one of calmness and beauty, characteristic of Købke’s subtle yet precise style, capturing the quiet yet vibrant life by the Danish shores during the 19th century. The delicate rendering of light and atmosphere highlights Købke’s skill in landscape painting and his ability to capture the unique light of the Nordic lands.

Portraits, landscapes and the beauty of Scandinavian nature by Christen Købke (1810-1848). “The Danish master of light” was one of the best-known artists of the Danish Golden Age. Born in Copenhagen, Købke trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied under the portrait painter C.A Lorentzen. It was here that he was introduced to plein-air painting, which became the hallmark of his later work.
